U.S wins second match of London Volleyball Invitational against Egypt by 3-0
With the London Volleyball Invitational underway, the U.S. team played the second of its matches in the tournament yesterday, July 21, against Egypt. In their first match with Serbia, the U.S. squad lost to their rivals by 1-3. However, the Americans were
able to redeem themselves by winning the match against the Egyptians by 3-0.
The tournament, taking place at Earls Court, is acting as the testing ground for the London 2012 Olympics. The venue is going to host the indoor volleyball tournament at the prestigious international event next year.
The first set of the match saw a competitive display of volleyball from both sides and no one was sure which side would win. However, after claiming the opening set of the game, the Americans emerged as the stronger side in the second set and the Egyptians
were seen struggling all through. Playing with a two set deficit brought out a little aggression from the Egyptians in the third set but the Americans prevailed in winning the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-17 and 25-21.
Evan Patak did well for the U.S. squad and was able to post the highest number of points in his team by registering 15. Of these, 11 came from kills whereas the remaining four were made on aces. Helping out Patak was the outside hitter Matt Anderson, who
made his presence felt by posting 12 points in all, nine of which were obtained on kills while the rest on two aces and a block.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, the Egyptian player Ahmed Abdelhay was able to tally the highest number of points from among both sides as he scored 16 points by making 15 kills and one ace. Unfortunately for his team, Abdelhay was the only Egyptian
that was able to post individual scores in double digits.
Overall, the American squad performed better than the Egyptian in terms of attack. The U.S. team was able to make 44 kills successfully out of a total of 66 whereas the Egyptians could only boast of 37 that landed home after 78 tries. The U.S. made only
two hitting errors while the Egyptians made 11 of them.
The Americans have been able to improve their tournament record to show one win along with one loss. The match that the U.S. squad is going to play next is scheduled for today against the Mexican side. Mexico is cradling two defeats and has yet to score
a win. Egypt, who is shouldering the same record as the Mexicans will be playing the yet undefeated Serbian team.
