1. Didn't you already ask this question?

The census from 1940 will come out in 2012.

Try searching for old phone books.

  2. There's no chance of using the census for that. There's a 72 year rule protecting the privacy of people in the census. So you have a wait until that can be a source for your research. But you can go to the Santa Barbara library or California State Library and go through the city directories and property records to find your relatives.

  3. Well, as you know from all of the answers, those censuses haven't been released yet; however, you might want to see if the library in Santa Barbara has city directories going back that far. It is likely that they do. You could check at raogk.org and see if someone in Santa Barbara has volunteered for lookups or see if the Santa Barbara library has an " Ask the Librarian" area on their website. Good luck.

  4. Since census listings for that time period are not available yet, you might start piping the names into http://www.books.google.com , check for "Full View" (these are public domain and can be downloaded for free.)

Add +"Santa Barbara" to the search field.

I did this with Grinnell and ended up with lots of hits from the turn of the century for a Grinnell who was a well known bird scientist.

You might get some leads there, and don't forget to contact the local Santa Barbara area genealogical society at

    http://www.cagenweb.com/santabarbara/sbc...

Their web site is quite robust.

    Happy hunting.
