UAE 1,000 Guineas trends might be in for a change in 2012
Trends and favourites of the races can get deceiving at times, but for the UAE 1,000 Guineas, it is more as if the host country just cannot keep its hands off the trophy. The local trainer of Godolphin Racing, Saeed bin Suroor, has won the race seven
times through the eleven years that it has been raced.
Specifically the first five years since, 2001 were as if devoted for the UAE horses. It was in 2006 that the British trainer Jeremy Noseda got to win the race with his horse, Vague, while riding with M. Kinane.
In 2009, the race was won by the Saudi trained horse, So Shiny who was ridden by M Kinane as well for trainer J Barton. Last year it was the South African trainer, De Kock, who pulled off the show with his horse, Mahbooba, riding with Christophe Soumillon.
The title came Great Britain’s, Saudia Arabia’s and South Africa’s way just once while the rest of the editions were stamped by the UAE trainers, among them the most prominent being Saeed bin Suroor.
Due to that the Godolphin retained jockey, Frankie Dettori was able to become the winning jockey in 2004 and 2005 while M Kinane ended up winning as the jockey twice through luck, as at both the instances, the trainers and countries were different.
First he won through Great Britain and then Saudia Arabia.
After being raced five times already since 2001, the UAE 1,000 Guineas were upgraded to listed status in 2006, coincidentally the same year that the race got out of the UAE hands.
Out of the seven entries that will be contesting for the UAE 1,000 Guineas, two are from the Godolphin Racing trainer, Mahmood Al Zarooni, who will be represented by Gamilati and Pimpernel. It is almost as if the rest of the lineup is against their
‘tag team’.
Al Zarooni said: "They are both very nice fillies with very good form in Europe but Gamilati has that run under her belt this year and has proved herself on the Meydan Tapeta.
"Mickael Barzalona will ride Pimpernel, and they should both run well but that race fitness does suggest Gamilati is our best chance."
The rest competing include Bonne Idee, Alsindi, Moon Spun, Colorful Notion and Mary Fildes.
In case Gamilati does win this time around, then Frankie Dettori will become the winning jockey for a third time in the UAE 1,000 Guineas.
