UAE’s flat racing season
At par with any world class race, competition, attendance, ambiance and prize money is the Dubai World Cup Carnival. The 2013 Carnival will commence from 10th January, and it will reach the feature, the Dubai World Cup, by the end of March. Twenty-seven
group and listed races are planned in the eleven quality enriched meetings during the Carnival. The UAE flat racing season kicks off in November and goes on until March.
The total prize money up for grabs is $37.4 million which the racing sensations and icons from all the corners of the globe will contest for.
Lined up for the participants are seven Group 1 contests, ten Group 2 events, seven Group 3 races accompanied by three Listed Races during the event.
“The success of the Dubai World Cup Carnival and the Dubai World Cup has brought international prominence to racing in Dubai and the UAE,” Meydan Group Board Member and Chairman of the Racing Committee, said Mr. Malhi Al Basti. “Each year we welcome the
best in racing to Dubai for our Dubai World Cup Carnival, a season that is the goal of horsemen from around the world. It is our privilege to share our passion for this wonderful sport that connects the world through the power and beauty of the horse.”
Two of the prime racing stables at the Carnival are those of Mahmood Al Zarooni and Saeed bin Suroor from the Godolphin string, one of the most influential and significant across the globe and almost the monopoly holders in the UAE.
The advantage of domestic stables gives the facility the leverage of flooding in maximum number of entries in the feature races and most of their entries end up taking the prize money back to the stables. It has happened that sometimes all the first three
positions are taken by the Godolphin candidates.
The operation makes sure that they devote all the resources at this time of the year, with all the jockeys and trainers onboard. Last time the world’s richest race was won by Monterosso who was ridden by jockey, Mickael Barzalona.
Whether they will give a breather to the international contestants in the coming seasons or not is a really hard one to figure out.
