UBS Hong Kong Open – Miguel Angel Jiménez grabs the clubhouse lead

Miguel Angel Jiménez fired a five-under par 65 in Thursday’s morning round, to take the clubhouse lead at the UBS Hong Kong Open.
The tournament is being played at the Hong Kong Golf Club, and is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour.
Starting on the 11th hole, the Spaniard got off to a brilliant start by carding birdies on each of the first three holes that he played.
He then added another two birdies on the 17th and the 18th hole to reach the turn in five-under.
Afterwards, he continued playing decent shots on the course and earned another two shots on the third and the sixth hole.
Entering the last two holes of the day, he was seven-under for the round. However, he failed to keep the momentum going and faltered for two back-to-back bogeys to end the day.
Despite melting down in the final moments of his round, he led the field by one stroke. José María Olazábal, Lian-Wei Zhang, Fredrik Andersson Hed and YE Yang tied for the second position with a four-under par 66.
Jiménez holds a strong track record in the event, having won the tournament in 2005 and 2008. This week, he plans to add another title to his resume, in a bid to become the oldest winner on the European Tour – he is 48 years old.
The 2012 European Ryder Cup team’s vice captain earned 11 of his 18 European Tour victories after turning 40.
Therefore, he certainly has the potential to achieve another milestone this week, by maintaining consistency in the tournament.
“I'm putting very well. It's a pity that I missed a fairway on the ninth hole and then I had to lay up and I missed a three metre putt,” he said.
“Then on the last hole, I got a big flyer, and that is the defence of the golf course, when you miss the fairway and go in the rough”.
He added, “I like the place. The first time I came here I won the tournament here and then I won three years later also. I like it. It's an old fashioned golf course, it's not very long, but I need to be very precise”.
