UCI will not hesitate to sanction Lance Armstrong, Pat McQuaid
UCI President, Pat McQuaid has gone public for the first time when he noted that UCI will not falter to process a life time ban on Alberto Contador, followed by the USADA decision.
He noted that if USADA provides enough evidence to help them with a lifetime ban, the firm will do what is required and the cyclist will be stripped off from all the previous victories, including the seven Tour de France wins.
UCI have been notified by the actions taken by USADA earlier but Pat is still waiting for the American Doping Authority to send the required evidence to process the ban.
UCI will have a three-week window to decide whether or not they have to make an appeal against the decision made by USADA.
The appeal can be made at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the cyclist himself has stated that he will not fight against the USADA charges.
The 40-year-old marked his professional debut back in 1992 with Team Motorola and spent a period of five years with the team.
He also represent Team Cofidis (1997), Team US Postal (1998-2004), Team Discovery Channel (2005), Team Livestrong (2006-2008), Team Astana (2009) and spent the last two years of his career with Team RadioShack, through 2010 to 2011.
"If ultimately the UCI has to sanction, we will have no problems. We've sanctioned many good riders in the past”.
“We've put them out of the sport and we're not afraid to do it with anybody," McQuaid told Cyclingweekly.
“People can say what they want, and make statements but the UCI is not involved in it so don’t ask me to comment”.
“We’re not commenting on the Armstrong investigation and that remains the case. Let USADA carry on with this investigation,” McQuaid said in July.
The American has always been a top performer in the side and has several individual and stage race victories in his bag.
He is ranked amongst the best stage race cyclists of all time and seven consecutive Tour de France victories in his bag are sufficient to justify his class.
It will be interesting to see if USADA continuous to sanctions Armstrong which will eventually mean a life time ban, since the cyclist has decided not to fight the USADA charges and calling it a “Witch-Hunt”.
