UCLA Bruins launch power on BYU Cougars – Volleyball news
The match between UCLA Bruins and Cougars of Brigham Young University on Friday night was full of eye-catching action on the net.
The Bruins grabbed 3-2 (29-27, 25-16, 22-25, 18-25, 20-18) victory but Cougars should be credited for a great effort in the match. The John Wooden Centre set up the field of play, where two teams showcased their amazing volleyball skills.
The tussle between the two team start when BYU scored early points of the game, while UCLA was yet to be on board. The Cougars went straight into action and forced the opponent to trail behind. UCLA struggled with a deficit of four points at 6-10 but managed
to catch up with the Cougars at 12-all. Gonzalo Quiroga was the main person behind all this effort.
However, the resilient rival BYU played some tricky shots and retook the lead. In response, UCLA threw everything in attack but somehow lagged behind. The exchange of long rallies kept the spectators in a magic spell. The game continued until Bruins finally
hit the mark with 29-27 win.
Despite a good start, the Cougars fell behind but hit aggressively in the second set. Meanwhile, UCLA used the competitive edge and built a pressure on the opposite side. As a result, BYU committed some unforced mistakes and failed to achieve desired results.
California Bruins once again attacked via Gonzalo Quiroga and extended their lead to 2-0 by winning second set.
Seemingly, BYU Cougars were deep down in trouble after the loss of two sets in row but the team regrouped in third set and followed a new attack strategy. On the other side of the net, UCLA looked every stronger with two sets in hand.
As a result the third set became ultra competitive as both sides played to their full potential. The BYU squad played with great sense and managed to overcome the charged-up Bruins. A ‘25-22’ victory in third set create the ray of hope for Cougars and game
entered the fourth set.
The Cougars drew all the attention toward them as they created the deadlock of 2-2 by capturing fourth set, 25-18. It was an equal chance for both teams to clinch success in the final set and in the match. The decisive 15-point golden set started out and
both sides were under tons of pressure. There was no telling about the potential outcome of the match until the final whistle of referee, which put a big wide smile on UCLA fans. The Bruins sealed final set victory after an intense fight (20-18) and settled
for victory.
The same John Wooden Centre will host another match between these two teams on Saturday. The Cougars will have a great opportunity to take revenge of their previous defeat.
Nonetheless, the Bruins are not easy to defeat as they are currently enjoying a great rhythm and tone. The match is surely going to be a cracking fight and a lot of volleyball buffs are looking forward to see the next action thriller. Check back for latest
