UConn’s Cody Endres suspended for season
University of Connecticut Huskies starting quarterback Cody Endres has been suspended by the university for the remainder of the season, after continually violating the team’s substance abuse policy.
Endres was suspended by the team in August and missed the first three games of the season. When he returned he relieved back-up quarterback Zach Frazer in the team’s game against the Buffalo Bulls on 25 September. The youngster then went on to start the
next two games before the team decided to suspend him for the season.
It is unlikely the Connecticut offence will miss Endres a great deal, as the team has struggled through the air all season and currently sits 91st on the country, averaging 176.2 yards per game. Instead the team has been relying on a strong running
game, which checks in at 30th in the nation, averaging 196.3 yards per game. Nevertheless, the team was helped on to a winning record with Endres in the line-up, as the junior posted a 2-1 record.
The Huskies are said to be replacing Endres with redshirt freshman Michael Box, who was bumped up to the back-up spot in place of a struggling Frazer. The decision to move Box up to the starting position may have to do with the club’s decision to look towards
the future, as they currently sit at 3-3 overall with a conference record of 0-1. With six games left and one of them against #20 West Virginia the Huskies do not have a good shot at winning the Big East in 2010.
In addition to Endres, the club also announced that they would be suspending offensive guard Erik Kuraczea for the rest of the season. Upon hearing the news Kuraczea decided to withdraw from the school.
In three games this season with the Huskies Endres managed 471 passing yards and five touchdowns.
