UEFA BSC Young Boys – up, close and personal
The BSC Young Boys have been coming up with an impressive show lately. During their latest campaign in the UEFA Champions League, currently in progress, they first managed to cause a huge upset by beating Fenerbahçe SK and then they did it again by beating English side Tottenham Hotspurs. Who exactly are the BSC Young Boys and what has inspired their recent very good run of wins? The Swiss team is making headlines and is showing the intense skill level and talent that they have in their side at the moment. This team looks like it has a lot more in store for the future and is definitely one to watch out for.
The Swiss club BSC Young Boys was formed in 1898 in the capital city of Bern. The club is one of the most famous and well-respected Swiss football clubs in the country and has a host of national and international fans. After having a good start early on, the club really found fame and prestige during its golden period of 1951 to 1964 under Coach Albert Sing. The German coach was previously unknown before he took charge of the team and he initially reinforced the team with some high name transfers. In 1953 the team went on a tour of North America, where they played a few American teams, drew with Liverpool and defeated the Irish national team. The success that the team met with overseas made them national heroes and propelled Swiss football into a new era. Year 1959 was a wonderful time for the club and they went on winning sprees in Europe. No other Swiss team had a more successful season than the Young Boys did in 1959. Over the years the club had its ups and downs but still managed to produce spectacular results and is currently doing very well in the 2010 UEFA Champions League finals.
The Young Boys team had a bit of a sputtering start to the competition this year before making a strong showing against Fenerbahçe and now Tottenham. The coach of the side said that the team can go very far in this year’s competition if they play with the same level of intensity and passion with a little more effectiveness. Tottenham were targeting a win but they came up against a very strong and in form Swiss team, which pushed them into making mistakes. The score of the game was eventually 3-2 with a late goal scored by Tottenham player Pavlyuchenko. The Young Boys dominated the first-half scoring all three of their goals in the first 45 minutes but the English side came back with a goal in the dying minutes of the first half to make it 3-1. The Swiss club must have thought they were in the driver’s seat with three early goals but the Hotspurs made a fighting effort to almost level the match.
This was a new tournament for the Spurs, which had not played in the European Champions League before and it was also the first time that the Young Boys had played in the group stages. It seems the English side were favourites going into the match and the manager, Harry Redknapp said that although his team was one of the favourites going into the match, they had to show their Swiss opponents the utmost respect. A few things went against the Spurs favour in the meeting with the Young Boys. Firstly, Astroturf is used in the UEFA tournament and it is also used in the Young Boys home stadium as well. They instantly had the advantage there and maybe the Spurs also suffered from a little bit of arrogance going into the match because they really thought they were going to win the match with ease. When their opponents started to score early goals and they started to make mistakes, it all started to go wrong for Redknapp’s side. The Young boys proved to be the stronger team, despite the fact that they have not been having the best start to their domestic season losing all three of their opening games.
This year’s UEFA finals are heating up and the rest of the competition looks all set to be a very exciting one to watch. It will be very interesting to see how far the Young Boys manage to go in the tournament and whether they can repeat their string of good performances.
