UEFA Champions League: Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan win while Arsenal stumble again
Cristiano Ronaldo was on target at Amsterdam Arena as Real Madrid won 4-0 against Ajax
Ronaldo scored twice in the second half after Karim Benzema had given Madrid the lead, while Alvaro Arbeloa added a second on the stroke of half-time. Real Madrid won 4-0 without breaking a sweat at Ajax to go through as group
winners.
The game was overshadowed by second yellows that were shown to Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos for deliberately wasting time. Mourinho is accused of gamesmanship as both players will miss the next game at home to Auxerre and
will have a clean slate in next round.
Mourinho was adamant that there is no truth in these stories.
“Stories sell, but the important thing is the 4-0 win and the fantastic game we had. Let's talk about that and not other things," said the Special One in his usual style.
In the other Group G match, AC Milan won 2-0 at Auxerre, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s wonder goal coming from nowhere and Ronaldinho was on target after coming from the bench.
Undoubtedly, the game of the night was at Stadio Olimpico where AS Roma pulled off the result of the night; they were two goals down courtesy of Mario Gomez before coming from behind to beat Bayern Munich 3-2 at
the end. Marco Borriello and Daniele de Rossi brought Roma level. Francesco Totti completed the fabulous comeback to put Roma ahead by converting from the spot.
Chelsea put their bad form in Premier League behind to win 2-1 against MSK Zilina. They went a goal down after Babatounde Bello scored in 19 minutes to put the away side ahead. The goal sent shockwaves across Stamford Bridge but
Daniel Sturridge levelled things up just after the break and Florent Malouda scored in the 86th minute to win it for the English Champions. Chelsea are chasing six wins out of six in group fixtures, a record no British club has achieved in European Competition.
French club Marseille joined Chelsea in next round as group F runners-up with a 3-0 win away to Spartak Moscow; Mathieu Valbuena, Loic Remy and Brandao all scored in Russia.
Arsenal’s woes continue as they were beaten 2-0 by Braga at the Estadio Municipal. The home side scored two late goals courtesy Brazil striker Matheus. Arsenal’s bad night was capped by a hamstring injury to Captain
Cesc Fabregas. He will miss this weekend’s game in the Premier League.
