Harry Redknapp’s men secure top spot in their Champions’ League group
After securing a remarkable 3-3 draw with F.C Twente in their last UEFA Champions’ League group stage game, Tottenham has successfully secured the top spot in their group as Inter Milan failed to win their respective encounter
against Werder Bremen. Harry Redknapp’s side, who qualified for the UEFA Champions League competition after obtained a 4th place finish in the English Premier League season of 2009-2010, have surprised everyone with their attacking prowess in the
tournament so far.
Tottenham bested Inter Milan at the White Hart Lane after they lost to the European Champions at San Siro during the group stages by 4 goals to three. Not only that, they also defeated Werder Bremen convincingly, a feat that cannot
be understated.
Now as the Spurs set their sights on the weekend’s encounter against Chelsea, they will be waiting UEFA’s draws for the Round of 16 stages of the UEFA Champions League. Tottenham’s top spot finish in their own group means that
they will not face the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the next round of the competition.
However, there is still a possibility that the likes of Roma and A.C Milan will face the London club as both the Italian club sides are looking as odd’s on favorites to finish second in their respective groups. After securing the
top spot in their group, Tottenham’s Manager Harry Redknapp was quite bullish in his post-match interview as he touted up his team’s chances of make it big in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Englishman said, "People look at us, especially our home record. We are always dangerous at White Hart Lane and we've got players that can cause people problems. With people like Rafael van der Vaart getting fit and coming
back in as well and one or two others coming back from injury hopefully in the near future, we've got a good squad of players.”
He went onto say, "We can cause anybody problems; we'd give anybody a game, for sure. I'm not saying we're going to win the Champions League but I think that whoever we draw, it'll be an interesting game. We've got every chance."
The former Portsmouth Manager was expressive of his thoughts as he remarked on Tottenham’s top of the group finish. He added, "It was important to win it because the teams that are going to finish top - the Barcelonas, the Real
Madrids - they've won their groups." Tottenham will be hoping that the likes of Gareth Bale and Van Der Vaart will be fit for the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The Round of 16 stages begins in February of 2011, at a time when league football will
be at its peak in England, Italy and Spain along with Portugal and Germany.
Redknapp further added, "You can't have it all ways. You either play that way or you play with one striker. We've gone for it, we have a go. We look to score and we look to attack teams at every opportunity. We're open. I feel
we've got to play people who can score and people who can hurt teams and that are how we've approached the games.”
Tottenham’s group in the UEFA Champions League included the German giants Werder Bremen, Dutch club side, F.C Twente and European Champions, Inter Milan.
Harry Redknapp concluded the interview by stating, “At the end of the day, we've finished top of the group. You can't say, 'Well they've conceded goals'; we've scored more goals than anybody. If you want us to shut up shop, we
can do that and come away and be difficult to beat and stick five across midfield. But we don't; we come away and have a go." Tottenham Hotspur drew 3-3 in their last game in the UEFA Champions League against F.C Twente, Jermaine Defoe netted twice for the
London club after Peter Wisgerhof scored an own goal for the Dutch club side.
