After the first half ended with the score line at 1-0 in favour of the Spanish giants, Real Madrid, second half kicked off with a flurry as Auxerre’s striker Roy Contout was caught offside in the 46th minute. It was
a poor run by the striker who was quite disappointing on the night.
In the 49th minute of the match, Real Madrid added to their one goal lead as Cristiano Ronaldo was played in by Marcelo Vieira down the left hand side of attack for the men in white. The Portuguese winger made no mistake
as he got his goal after controlling the pass from Marcelo. The former World Player of the Year lashed the ball into the top left hand corner of the Auxerre net as Real cemented their place as the group leaders.
In the 52nd minute of the match, Contout found himself in space just outside the Real Madrid penalty area. The striker pivoted and then let loose a powerful shot, which was just inches away from the Real Madrid goal.
It was a nice effort by the striker, who lacked support and service throughout the match. In the 56th
minute of the match, Traore grew in confidence as he tried his luck on goal, but his shot was successfully handled by Real Madrid’s goalkeeper as the Los Galacticos remained in front with a two-goal lead. In the 61st minute, Auxerre made their
first change of the match as Frederic Sammaritano replaced Benoit Pedretti for the home side.
In the 65th minute of the match, Marcelo drove forward for Madrid after embarking on a glorious run from inside his own half of the field. The Brazilian full back showcased some amazing skills before entering the Auxerre
penalty area, but his shot in the end was off the target as he couldn’t cap the move off with a goal. However, what Marcelo couldn’t do, was perfected by Benzema later on.
In the 61st minute of the match, the French striker bagged Real’s third goal as he gathered a pass from Ronaldo and then easily finished off the move with a keen finish into the right hand bottom corner. In the 75th minute,
Real made their substitution as Ezequiel Garay came on for Marcelo, who was impressive on the night alongside the likes of Ronaldo and Benzema for Jose Mourinho’s side.
In the 88th minute, Benzema bagged Real Madrid’s 4th goal and his third of the night to make it a hat trick for himself as he capitalized on a mix up in Auxerre’s defence. It was an easy finish for the French
international as Real Madrid brought the score line to 4-0. Thus, at full time, Real Madrid ended up as eventual winners whereas Auxerre had to be content with a heavy loss at the full time whistle.
