UEFA Champions League Team of the 2010/11 Season
Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1 in the final of the UEFA Champions League 2010/11 at the Wembley Stadium on May 28th, 2011. The Catalans were the deserved winners of this year’s competition and they lifted the cup for fourth time in their
history.
There were some incredible individual performances on show in this year’s competition and four of them came from Barcelona, while the runners-up, United, also claimed two spots.
Bettor.com will now look at the best XI from the 2010/11 Champions League. The formation chosen to select the team is 4-3-3.
Goalkeeper—Manuel Neuer (Schalke’04)
Neuer was incredible in his debut Champions League campaign and was one of the main reasons in his team’s dream journey in this year’s competition. The German international goalkeeper made 12 appearances in the competition and kept 3 clean sheets but pulled
off some stunning saves consistently throughout the season. The 25-year-old made some glorious saves in his team’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the semi-final and if he had not been there, the Red Devils could have easily gone on to score
6 or 7 goals in the game.
Right-Back---Dani Alves (Barcelona)
Alves once again proved that he is the best right back in the world today. The Brazilian helped the Catalans to keep 5 clean sheets in 12 appearances in the competition. His attacking capabilities threatened the opposition defences on regular basis as he
scored two goals and assisted in three goals as well.
Centre-back---Ricardo Carvalho (Real Madrid)
The Portuguese was one of the most consistent performers of the competition and helped his side to keep six clean sheets in the 9 appearances he made for Los Blancos. Carvalho missed the first-leg of the semi-final against Barcelona due to suspension and
the Madrid defence was badly exposed without him.
Centre-back---Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Unarguably the best defender in the world today, Vidic, has had a very consistent campaign as ever. The Serbian missed the early part of the season through injury and when he returned, he showed his presence felt in the team. His man of the match performances
against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 simply showed the quality the man possesses. Due to his presence in the United defence, the Red Devils conceded only four goals in the tournament prior to the final.
Left-back---Marcelo (Real Madrid)
The full-back has not been known for his defensive qualities but his attacking threat was clearly visible in the Madrid side. The Brazilian scored two goals and contributed with two assists in 12 appearances this season. He fulfilled his defensive qualities
with expertise and helped his side to keep 6 clean sheets.
Right Midfield---Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)
Iniesta is unarguably one of the best midfielders in the world today and he showed his http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 class in the big games this season. His quick passing along with clever movement mesmerised even the best teams in the world and it was clearly visible in the final
of the competition.
Centre Midfield---Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona)
Alongside Iniesta, Xavi was a treat to watch for the quality football supporters. Xavi was the engine that kept the Barcelona attack moving and he kept balance in the attack and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904 of the Catalonian team. The veteran midfielder scored two goals and
contributed with three assists in 12 appearances throughout the tournament. His midfield display in the final of the tournament was simply outstanding and commanded the midfield with expertise.
Left-Midfield---http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985 (Manchester United)
The evergreen Ryan Giggs once again proved that he is still one of the most destructive players in the business. The 37-year-old provided stability and experience to United’s squad and assisted in United’s last four goals of the competition.
Right-Forward---Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Not the best of the campaign for the Portuguese winger compared to his heroics of the La Liga season but still his contribution took Jose Mourinho’s men in the semi-finals of the competition after a long time. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ronaldo-c31734 scored 6 goals in 12 appearances this
season and his pace and trickery mesmerised even the best defenders in the competition.
Centre-Forward---Samuel Eto’o (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan)
Eto’o was the only bright spot in a disappointing campaign for the Champions of the 2009/10 season. The Cameroonian international scored 8 goals and also chipped in with five assists in 10 appearances this season but still could not inspire his team to defend
their crown.
Left-Forward---Lionel Messi (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604)
The best player in the world was easily the best player of the tournament as well. The Argentinean finished the season as the highest goal-scorer with 12 goals from 13 appearances and also assisted in three of his team’s goals. His commendable performances
in the tournament definitely place him on top of the list for this season’s Ballon D’Or award.
Question for the thoughtful reader remains: Would this team perform better than the recently crowned Champions of Europe?
