UEFA Champions League news, Tottenham Hotspurs target top spot in their group
Tottenham’s manager, Harry Redknapp, has come out and stated his team’s intent to finish at the top of their UEFA Champions’ League group to avoid a hard-tie in the round of sixteen.
Tottenham won their last UEFA Champions League match against Werder Bremen at the White Hart Lane, thanks to an impressive performance by the likes of Peter Crouch and Luka Modric.
However, as Tottenham have already sealed their spot for the round of sixteen, it is quite possible that Harry might field a weakened side against F.C Twente in their final group stage match of the competition.
If Spurs fail to get a favourable result against F.C Twente and Inter Milan win against Werder Bremen in their last match of the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, the London club might face the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich or even Real Madrid
in the round of sixteen.
To avoid such heavy weights of the competition early on, Tottenham must win their tie against F.C Twente. Nonetheless, even a second place finish in their group will allow them to qualify for the round of sixteen. It has already been quite a memorable return
to European football for Tottenham as they defeated Inter Milan by three goals at White Hart Lane before thumping Werder Bremen.
Tottenham’s manager, who saw Barcelona rip apart Real Madrid last Sunday, spoke to the press recently as he said, "I think everyone wants to avoid them (Barcelona)! It was just amazing; it was as good as I have ever seen. I don't think I've ever seen a better
performance. It just goes to show you don't need big power. Any little lads out there, who are growing up, don't ever be told you're too small to play the game, because it's about ability, this game”.
He added, "Look at Barcelona with their players: (Andres) Iniesta, Xavi (Hernandez) - just incredible - (Lionel) Messi. Tiny little lads with fantastic ability. So, when you've got that ability and you can play and pass the ball, that's the way to play the
game. Any little kids who watch and get told they're too small; watch that video and you'll see you're never too small. It's not about size; it's about ability and wanting to play".
Tottenham currently top their group but only on goal difference as they are tied on points with the present European Champions, Inter Milan. Harry spoke about the upcoming matches in the UEFA Champions League as he said, "They'll (F.C Twente) want to win;
they'll want to beat us, for sure, and we want to finish top if we can, so there is a lot to play for. Inter Milan will go to Germany looking to win because that top position is important”.
He concluded by stating, "Otherwise, it's Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. If you can, you want to avoid them and you do want to finish top. You would certainly have a better chance of getting someone (less difficult) and progressing".
