UEFA Super Cup: Full Time report – Inter Milan vs Atletico Madrid
Inter Milan were scheduled to take on Spanish side, Atletico Mardid. The match that they were going to be playing was the European Super Cup match. The European Super Cup is contested every year by the teams that have won the Champions League and the Europa League. The question was, will Inter Milan manage to take home their fifth title? Or will Atletico Madrid surprise everyone by creating another one of their signature upsets?
Going into the game it was strongly believed that Inter Milan would pick up an easy win. However considering that neither team had played each other before, the experts were not to keen in picking what the score line would read or who would score all the goals. Inter were by far the better team defensively where as Atletico were the better team on the offense. Prior to kick off the match was shaping up to be an old fashioned grudge match between the sides, who were looking to take home some silverware.
The fans were going ecstatic in their seats as the players were taking the field. The referee knew that he would be refreeing one of the biggest games of his life, so he would have to get it all right on the night.
The teams on the night were as follows:
Inter Milan: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Lucio. W. Samuel, C. Chivu, J. Zanetti, E. Cambiasso, D. Stankovic, W. Sneijder, S. Eto, D. Milito.
Atletico Madrid: D. Forlan, S. Aguero, R. Garcia, Simao, J. Reyes, P. Assuncao, A. Dominguez, D. Godin, L. Perea, T. Ujfalusi, D. De Gea.
The match kicked off with the Champions League winners dominating possession in the opening few minutes. The early possession almost lead to a goal as Maicon played in Sneijder but the players volley went sailing over the goal post.
Three minutes later, Forlan tried to play in Aguero but the player was kept out by an on rushing Samuel who smashed the ball away to saftey.
There were not any more chances for the next twenty minutes. On the twenty seventh minute, Sneijder whipped in a beautifully weighted corner which Samuel connected with, however the defender could not keep his header down and the ball went sailing over the post.
Five minutes later, Aguero left the Inter defense for dead as the forward went dancing past them, however his shot from inside the area went wide of the goal to the players despair. That was easily the best chance of the match, but the Argentinean player just could not stay composed to finish his brilliant solo run.
The first half ended with the scores being level at nil all. Both the managers had a lot to talk to their players about during the break.
The second half kicked off with the same intensity as the first half. Both the teams were going toe to toe. However contrary to earlier belief it was Atletico that seemed to be stronger on the night. This threatening style of play finally paid off as on the sixty first minute the Spanish team had the first goal of the game.
Reyes side stepped past Maicon before thumping a left footed drive through Cesar, who could do nothing to keep the shot out.
Inter had their chance to go level on the seventy third minute, Sneijder whipped in another fine ball to the back post, but Smauel Eto’o managed to guide his header over the ball from point blank range.
In the eighty second minute, Atletico Madrid killed the game; Simao raced past a very slow Lucio and squared the ball to Aguero who had the simple task of tapping the ball into the back of the net.
The match ended with Atletico winning the UEFA Super Cup. However what was more important to note on the night was that Inter's defending was simply terrible. This just proved that Rafa Benitez has a lot of work on his hands to replace Mourinho at the San Siro.
