UEFA Under 19 Championship Stars to look out for
The UEFA Under-19 Championships are underway in France with 8 teams participating in the tournament. France and Spain have got off to a flier winning both their opening matches and already booking their berths in the semi finals of the tournament.
There are some sublime talents that are setting the championships alight this time around and here is a list of the most promising youngsters at this year’s competition:
Mattia Destro – Genoa - Italy
The Azzuris have not made the best of starts to their tournament as they have lost one and drawn one of their opening two matches but in Mattia Destro they have a striker who is giving defenders nightmares. Destro was the top scorer in the qualifiers with 8 goals in six games and is currently owned by Internazionale Milan but has been loaned out to Genoa for better first team playing prospects. In last year’s U-19 club championships, he scored a staggering 18 times earning him global recognition. The striker at the end of his loan deal will sign permanently for the Rossoblu as a part of the deal that saw Andrea Ranocchia going the other way.
Sergio Cannales – Real Madrid – Spain
If Real Madird sign a player under the galactico era he must be special. Last year they bought the likes of Cristano Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema, and this Januray they secured the services of Sergio Cannales from Racing Santander for a reported fee of 4.5 million Euros. Only at the age of 19 the player has half a season’s experience under his belt and his performance for Racing, last season made all and sundry take notice. Real were quick to snap up the teen prodigy. Along with Angel Di Maria and Pedro Leon he is the future of Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho has great faith in the youngster and has already made his debut for real Madrid. The player plays in a central attacking midfielder’s role and scored 6 times in 26 appearances for Racing last year that included a magnificent brace against Luis Fabiano’s Sevilla. The attacking midfielder is nimble footed and has pace to burn with a sharp turn that helps him beat the defenders easily. He was also a member of the UEFA European U-17 championship winning side in 2008.
Alexandre Lacezatte – Olympic Lyon - France
At six feet seven and half inches tall, he is one of the tallest players in world football and has just signed his first professional contract with Lyon. He made his debut for Les Gones in May this year and is regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in France at the moment. His heading is his forte while his pace is also not bad but experts believe that he may have to hone his shooting skills a bit. He is already among the top scorers at this year’s Championships with 2 goals to his name that he scored against Austria.
Dani Pacheco – Liverpool - Spain
Pacheco nickname is ‘the assasin’ at his club Liverpool and as the name suggest he has a lethal eye for goals and is a predator in the box. He is just 19 years of age and after spending the first 4 years of his youth career at Barcelona he was snapped up by Liverpool in 2007. After working his way through the youth ranks he was promoted to the first team in December last year and has already made his debut for the club. Pacheco is a thinking forward who can also score goals. He also is in the running for the Golden Boot award at the Championships after scoring both his sides’s goals against Portugal in the last match that made sure of his side’s progress to the last 4.
