Prized by European clubs for its prestige, the Champions League is also much coveted because of its financial attractiveness
Participation in the Champions League is perhaps the best insurance to meet the needs of a club playing in the Old Continent. Each year, 32 lucky clubs get a nice cheque from UEFA for participating in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
Now, UEFA has disclosed the distribution of finances of the tournament on its official website. Estimated gross business income for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup is 1.34 billion euros. On this amount, a sum of 55 million euros is given to
20 teams that participate in the knockout stages of the competition. This means that on average, each participating club gets 2.1 million euros.
Teams that win qualification to the group stages (PSG, Lille and Montpellier for instance), get a minimum basic of 8.6 million euros which will add to 1 million euros for each win and 500,000 euros for in case of a draw.
For those teams that successfully make it to the second round, a cheque of 3.5 million euros waits. Quarterfinalists gets 3.9 million euros while teams participating in the semis get a cheque of 4.9 million euros each.
Finally, the two teams that reach the final, would receive 6.5 million euros. The winner will be rewarded 10.5 million euros. In total, Champions League winners get a total of 37.4 million euros.
The team that wins the European Supercup will receive 3 million euros while the runner up will get 2.2 million euros. And, if the system is heavily in favour of big teams, small teams have not been forgotten.
Furthermore, as decided by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting of 30 June 2012 on the recommendation of the Club Competitions Committee, a contribution of €40m will be made from the UEFA Champions League club share to the UEFA Europa League club
share. In addition, €3m from the club share will be designated to subsidise the solidarity amounts for sides eliminated in the qualifying phase of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
