UEFA hand more misery to Jose Mourinho after humiliating defeat in El Clasico
UEFA has announced the punishment for Spanish giants Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho and four of its players for their recent red card fiasco during the Champions League match.
Jose Mourinho was initially handed a 2-match touchline ban, but later one of them was suspended for a three-year probation period. However, he will have to pay £33,400 fine in addition to the one match ban. A hefty £100,000 fine
has also been imposed on the club.
The players involved in this controversy were fined as well. Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos, who received red cards from the referee, will have to pay £16,700 each. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas and reserve goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek will
have to pay £8,300 and £4,100 respectively.
UEFA confirmed that these punishments have been announced because of improper conduct, but failed to explain them further.
UEFA published on its official website, on Tuesday, “The Spanish club's coach Jose Mourinho has been suspended from coaching activities for two UEFA club competition matches, of which the second is deferred for a probationary period
of three years. He was also fined €40,000.”
An automatic one-match suspension will stay as a result of red cards. The pair Alonso and Ramos will now miss their last group G match against AJ Auxerre on 8th December. It seems now, along with the players, the manager
will also watch the match from stands and will not be instructing his players, which will be a bigger blow for him.
UEFA added, “The red cards given to Alonso and Ramos stand, and they have therefore been suspended for one UEFA club competition match.”
Mourinho should consider himself lucky that the punishments are not that hard. People have been demanding severe suspensions and it was believed that players could be handed future suspensions.
Madrid has already qualified for the Champions League and neither a win nor a loss will make any difference in their group standings. They will remain on top of group G and qualify for the last 16. Mourinho is expected to rest
his main players so that they are not booked in the knockout stages of the competition.
Media speculations after the match were that the players had deliberately collected the red cards so that their slate is kept clean before the last 16 knockout matches.
Madrid’s number 1 goalkeeper Casillas and Dudek were also seen passing the message to the players from dugout.
The ban comes at a time when Mourinho and his team suffered their 1st defeat at the hands of Barcelona. The 5-0 thrashing in El Clasico has been the worst defeat for the Portuguese in his career and now this ban completes
the horrid 24 hours for him.
Now, Mourinho will be looking to forget this defeat as soon as possible because their next opponents in La Liga are Valencia and they need to focus fully on that match.
