The European governing body has ordered the Italian striker to pay the price for his controversial remarks about g*y footballers in a press conference during Euro 2012.
UEFA have announced their verdict on Antonio Cassano for his strong comments on homosexual footballers, and have imposed a fine of €15,000 (£11,679) as punishment for the striker.
The Azzurri attacker while addressing a press conference during Euro 2012, had stated that he hopes that there are no homosexual players in Italy’s Euro 2012 squad.
The debate on g*y sportsmen was on the rise during the European tournament, following Cesare Prandelli’s account in which he urged the homosexual footballers in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 to come out of the closet.
Cassano’s statement invoked a strong negative reaction from g*y rights activists, who accused the AC Milan-man of being homophobic.
Now, his negative portrayal of homosexuals has also put him in trouble with UEFA, who have announced the verdict of a fine following the close of the investigative proceedings on the matter.
The European body released an official statement, announcing the fine for Cassano, while also outlining that the player has the right to lodge an appeal against the verdict within three days of the arrival of the full judgement.
"Following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Italy's http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Antonio-Cassano-c6302 for a discriminatory press statement during Euro 2012, the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body has decided to impose a fine of €15,000 on the player. An appeal can be lodged
against this decision within three days of the dispatch of the full, written decision."
Antonio Cassano had earlier apologised for his statement, which he maintained had been reflected in a negative light by the media, and assured that he never intended to hurt the feelings of any community.
The striker who plays for Serie A side AC Milan was an integral part of Italy’s squad in Euro 2012, and appeared in all of the six matches for his country in the European Championship that was co-hosted by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Poland-c2983.
The Azzurri attacker scored just one goal during the course of the Euros, in which his team was thrashed by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 in the final match of the tournament.
