UFC Co-Owner, Lorenzo Fertitta takes action to legalize fights in New York – MMA News
A legal battle is escalating between the lawyers of the New York State and the representatives of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).
The legal tussle is between the two sides as they try to impose their own rule on the decision to ban MMA fights in the state of New York.
In 1990’s, the New York state had imposed a ban UFC to telecast any match on television. According to the lawsuit, which was filed against UFC, it was mentioned that these sort of fights were unconstitutional in nature.
Lorenzo Fertitta, who is the co-owner of the UFC presented the legal notice to lift the ban from UFC. Fertitta gave his authorized notice just after FOX network had telecasted a UFCevent.
The UFC event was featured on FOX on Saturday, November 12, 2011 which came with a cost of $16 million, a heavy investment which Zuffa LLC carried out in order for UFC matches to be shown on television.
Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC, is doing considerable amount of work to promote MMA and UFC fighters in the United States.
The American businessperson, Lorenzo Fertitta, owner of the UFC has been in pursuit of legalizing the fights that have been under legal control for over a decade.
One of the reasons for UFC to come under a legal threat was the cruel fights, which took out a toll on parts of the fighters. They get hurt and matches get cancelled when a fighter lose large amount of blood during the fight.
These aspects of the sport have advanced over the past few years as better fighting equipment and stand-by paramedics have made the sport quite safe.
In 1997, New York stood as the first state in the USA to impose a ban on mixed martial arts. Nearly thirty states also shouted out against the MMA and UFA fights but most of them overturned their ban and gave way for these fights to be held in their respective states.
The other state apart from New York is Connecticut, which follows an active ban on the sport.
Over the past few years, many famous people in New York have raised their voice in lifting the ban from MMA in New York. Melvina Latham, who chairs New York’s State Athletic Commission, was one of those who showed their concern for giving freedom to MMA in the state.
Many times in the past bills and recommendations were taken up in the Senate but the proceedings went on without any decision.
