the thing is i like watching UFC but the only thing i dont like is when they are like on the map just holding each other for like 20 minutes. But i also think that fighting on the mat is a important skill in fighting. its just boring to watch.

so my question is what do you think?

do you agree or disagree, or something in between?

  1. At least you understand the skill it takes. Its not as exciting though, very few people find it exciting, and those that do are those who are involved in the sport or are total fanatics. The fact is though, MMA started to find the best fighters, not to get the biggest crowds or make the most money, and its stayed true, so if a fighter wins by taking it to the ground, i take it as them trying to win, not trying to sell out.

  2. personally that is what I thought at first myself, but then that has become even more entertaing to me at time then ineffective standup fighting. though when one guy just lays on the other is it very boring.

  3. The most boring thing in the world is watching two guys circle each other throwing no punches or kicks for an entire match.  But, I do agree that going to ground and clenching each other is also boring to watch.

However, going to ground is not always boring.  Hello, Urijah Faber?  You get some of the most exciting fights from ground and pound action.  Yeah, it isn't as decisive or unforgettable as a beautiful KO punch right on the button, but it makes for some awesome fights.

  4. Once you learn and see all the small things they do while lying on a mat you appreciate it more. Just try and watch vidoe's of how to do the moves and reverse them.

It will give you a whole new appreciation for that aspect of the sport.

  5. It depends on what you're into.  I have a wrestling background so watching the hip rotation to get out of trouble and possibly back to the feet is always something I will just watch in awe.  As for a "boring" ground game, watch Faber throw an elbow or forearm from the top. The speed and ferocity that they're thrown at is C-R-A-Z-Y.  Then you have the Torres fight tonight where he and his opponent had dueling leg/foot/ankle locks on.  That all started from the ground.

Once you start understanding and appreciating all of the other skills involved (BJJ, wrestling, muy thai, etc...) I guess the only thing you can like about MMA is boxing.  Kinda sad if you think about it.

  6. the explosive knockouts are always fun too watch... and people who are fanatics about BJJ (Brazilian jujitsu (spelling?) ) like the ground fighting. So yeah i agree 100% stand up is a lot funner but if your trying to win a MMA match ... ground work is a must! (in most situations)

  7. Watch Tyson Griffin-Clay Guida, or Tyson Griffin-Thiago Tavares. Will completely change your outlook on ground fighting.

  8. I agree the lying on the mat isn't good and I think it makes the sport look bad.

  9. I would have to agree that watching 20 minutes of fighting on the mat is boring, but they dont really do that any more. When the UFC began years ago and there were no rules or time restraints, then you would actually watch 10 OR 20 minutes of nothing but 2 fighters tying themselves together and staying that way. In todays UFC  the ref. will almost always break the fighters and make them stand up when they are not actively aggressive for more than a minute or so. This is probably because they are trying to appeal to a larger audience by staying more exciting and fast paced. And lets face it, All though mixed martial arts bouts are for sport, they are also an entertainment company. And they must entertain or risk going bankrupt. Which, until lately  was a very real concern for the UFC.  and yes, ground fighting skills are an important part of a good fight, sometimes fighters just can not stand against a good striker, so getting in close and making them 'cry uncle' is the only way to win a no win situation.

  10. Each side of the fight has it's high points... the tactical approach the fighters take when on the ground is really amazing when done by a skilled fighter... yes I hate when someone gets rocked and they go for a take down just to catch their breath... but I can understand the strategy and can appreciate it... but who doesn't love seeing a huge knockout out... so I agree and disagree...
