UFC adds ‘Sudden Death’ round to UFC on FX 2 – UFC News
UFC on FX 2 is scheduled to take place on March 3, 2012 in Australia, which will be the debut event of UFC’s new flyweight division along with a ‘Sudden Death’ round. The ‘sudden death’ round will only be applicable to bouts for the 125-pound tournament.
News of the ‘sudden death’ round was revealed by Demetrious Johnson, who will be participating in the tournament against Ian McCall, saying, “I don't know if anybody has said anything about it, and this is the first time I'm mentioning it, is that we (McCall
and himself) had to sign for a ‘sudden death' bout. If it goes to three rounds, and the judges can't decide who the winner is, then we'll do a fourth round."
Usually, if by the third rounds judges are unable to select a winner, the match is considered a draw. However, since this will be UFC’s first attempt towards crowning a champion for its newly introduced division, the organisation will make sure to have a
champion on hand before the event is over. This is probably the reason as to why this new rule has been applied.
When Johnson was asked if other participants have also signed the same contract, he said, “"I'm assuming that it's for me and Ian McCall.” He further said that he is unable to comment whether the rule is will be there for Joseph and Yasuhiro, two other participants.
He added that he is not sure if others have signed it but he and his opponent surely has.
Semi-finals of the flyweight tournament will take place on UFC on FX 2, scheduled for March 3, 2012. Johnson is set to battle McCall, whereas Benavidez will face Yasuhiro. Winners of both the matches will then go head to head with each other in another UFC
event.
As of now, the UFC has made no official announcement on the ‘sudden death’ rule and its inclusion. Whether the rule is just for this event or it will be part of all UFC events is still to be known. Until there is an official announcement by the UFC, nothing
can be said on the inclusion of this rule.
