UFC plans to hold debut event in Phillipines – UFC News
When the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was formed in 1993, all of its fights were held within the USA. As time went by, the UFC officials and management gathered momentum and a time came when fights broke boundaries and
were held outside of the United States. With Japan, Russia, Australia and United Arab Emirates being some of the hottest foreign venues for the UFC fighters, the bouts are now heading to the Far East. UFC is looking at the Philippines as the venue to hold
an event in the future.
The UFC management led by their President, Dana White, are holding talks and meetings with the Philippine-based media giant ABS-CBN. The two groups had met in the past but their previous meetings were not fruitful. Reports have
been that the two groups are in the hunt to secure a deal to make sure that UFC gets a chance to highlight their live events in the Philippines.
Earlier this year in May, White was hopeful to take The Ultimate Fighter to the Philippines but the plan could not move ahead any further. The UFC have been doing great in the Southeast Asian region. In Japan, UFC has been performing
above their expectations. The first ever UFC event held in Japan was the UFC Ultimate Japan in December 1997. It was followed by UFC 23 in November 1999, UFC 25 in April 2000 and UFC 29 in December 2000. The fifth UFC event in Japan is scheduled in February
2012 which will be UFC 144.
Keeping in mind the Southeast Asian market, UFC will be confident to make their mark in a very new territory, the Philippines. Japan and Philippines, both are in the Southeast Asian region and are famous for martial arts and combat
sports. UFC can cater to the Philippine market just the way they have been doing it in the Japanese market.
The UFC also has a weapon of choice on their side, who is Mark Munoz, the 33-year old Philippine mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. Nicknamed as The Filipino Wrecking Machine, Munoz could attract scores of Philippine MMA fans if
UFC holds its debut event in the country. Only time would tell when UFC would head to Philippine and add another territory under their name.
