UH men’s volleyball team wins against Grand Canyon in five sets – Volleyball news
Playing at home court and in front of the local audience, the University of Ohio men’s volleyball team posted 3-2 (25-27, 25-16, 25-21, 25-27, 15-12) win over Grand Canyon on Friday night.
The Stand Sheriff Centre on the UH campus hosted the action-packed thriller, where the home team pulled off success.
It was the first-ever non-conference match between these two schools, which turned out to be a nail-biting competition. The Lopes of Grand Canyon University took a great start and won very first frame in the match.
The Warriors of UH responded with back-to-back wins in the next two sets but Grand Canyon created the deadlock of 2-2 by winning fourth set. Game entered fifth decisive set, which put both teams to a real test of skills and temperament.
Finally, the Hawaiian squad managed to overcome the opponents and claimed 3-2 victory by winning final set of the game.
The home team was equipped with all necessary tools and tricks of the game. They jumped out of the gate and built a lead of 9-7. The guest team continued the chase and hit from all angles. The Warriors of Hawaii University kept the lead in their hand until
the visitors tied the score at 23-all.
The tie of scores near the end of first set created great suspense in the game. JP Marks and Tarantino of Grand Canyon put up a combined effort and let the Lopes to first-set win, 27-25.
The loss of the opening set simply put the Warriors on fire. They hit back aggressively in second set and dominated the Lopes. With better attack and defence strategy, Warriors cruised past to 25-16 win in the second set.
The UH squad carried the same momentum into next set and did not allow the opponent to hinder its performance. Lopes tried to poke the ball in gaps but Warriors defended beautifully and returned the ball with great skill.
As a result, third set also came successful for UH and they improved to 2-1 in the game. Final score of third set was 25-21.
After dropping two sets in the row, the Lopes returned in the game and claimed fourth set, 27-25. They managed to tie the game score at 2-2 but failed to stop Warriors in the final set of the game. UH men outshone the Lopes with 17-12 win in final set and
settled match victory.
The mentor of defeated GCU, Jeremy Price, expressed his views about the match. He stated, “We competed well enough to win. We just didn’t make enough plays at the end. I think everybody would have liked to have had a play or two back to try to make the difference.”
