  1. For sure, energy and food prices are going sky-high, thanks to the oil supply being hogtied by the liberal Democrats who are blocking our efforts to develop new oil reserves.  Thank them for that the next time you shop for groceries or gas up.

As for myself, I've switched to energy-conservative lightbulbs, turned up my thermostat , turned off the A/C, and opened windows when cool, and I now drive a 70 mpg motor scooter.  My van is parked in the driveway for use in inclement weather.

I'm doing my share, but there is no reason for such high prices.  We citizens must rise up and make our voices heard.

  2. yep energy prices are indeed due to go up by 40% in a year! Food prices are rising too but I'm not sure by that much.

There's lots of ways you can save energy - use energy saving light bulbs, turn off all lights/appliances when not in the room, dont leave things on standby, only have your heating on in the winter..even if it gets a bit chilly in the summer just put on a sweater.

Use price comparison websites to find the best energy supplier and if you can't afford the 40% hike go with one that has a price fix guarantee. it might be a bit more expensice in the begiining but at least you'll have the peace of mind that your bils wont shoot up later.

  3. Yep unfortunately.

Turn appliances off at the switch if they aren't used everyday, like a microwave, kettle etc. Switch things on when you need it.

Turn lights off when leaving rooms, turn computers off when finished rather than leave them running in case you might want to go back on it a little later etc etc.

A good thing to do is to cap your gas/electric payments. It's a tarrif where you may be paying a few £ more, but you use as much electric/gas you want on a fixed fee for a year. Your charge won't get affected by the 40% increase, but if the % decreases, so does your monthly fee. It's well worth considering, as you know what you will be paying for your gas and electric each month.

  4. Yes

  5. Yes it's supposed to be true.....at least that's what the scaremongers are telling us.

Like all true Brits we'll all just sit on our hands and do nothing in way of protest......as per usual.

If you feel that you can cut back 40% then go for it but I'm sure that you're already trying to do "your bit".

What a country we live in.

  6. My direct debt was put up £7 this week!

  7. Yes, electricity and gas prices are going to increase.  The power companies fuel prices have increased so they will pass on their costs to the customer.  Whether the rise will be 40% will depend on the exact situation. Some of the power sales people can inflate the situation to scare you into switching to them.

On food prices, most farmers have been selling their produce for the same price for around 30 years.  With fuel prices rising rapidly, they cannot afford to do it any more.  You need to ask Tesco and Sainsbury to reduce their profit margins though.

  8. I don't know about 40%, but prices are definitely rising.  Oil increases means electricity will cost more to produce (and guess whe's going to be asked to pay the difference .....), delivery of foods to the shops will cost more so price rises are inevitable.

Most of us could reduce our power usage a bit.  And we might have to, if we want to keep within budget.  And yes, switching providers might be one solution.

  9. be aware of npower they have been on watchdog alot lately inderhanded tactics to get customers yes the energy price are goin up by 40% this yr but i changed to southern electric for both gas and electric b4 xmas  (was previously with british gas and edf) my tarriff are fixed.
