My dad was born in London, but he no longer has his English citizenship. Will that make it at all easier for me to get an English citizenship? And how long does the entire citizenship process take?

  1. If you dad was still IN London it would make it easier, but since he is not i am sorry you will have to go through a long process which can take up to one year.... you must have a skill they need in London... they wont give you citizenship easy.

  2. Here is the procedure,

Your DAD needs to apply for his British (birth certificate & then ) passport, once he has the British Passport. You can apply for British citizenship afterwards.

Seems like u were born out of UK & have never lived there, means you may not get "British Citizenship" rather (if you qualify )you will be granted "British Overseas Citizenship". You then need to live in Britain & pay TAXES for three years to have the status of Full "British Citizenship".

  3. It might help, however since he no longer has his citizenship it doesn't automatically give you it. Contact the British Embassy in your area they will ut you in the right direction.

  4. If your dad gave up his British citizenship then you are not entitled to citizenship through descent.

Are you sure your dad renounce his citizenship? The UK allows dual citizenship. If your dad did not do that then he is still British, and you could gain it through him, if he was born before 1983.

  5. England does not recognize renunciations made in foreign countries. What that means is that if you swear an oath say in the US that you give up your previous citizenship the UK cares not as they don't care if one holds multiple passports. Once a citizen always a citizen.

My mother did all of that. Once she became a US citizen she just mailed all of the stuff to the UK embassy and that was that.

The best and easiest way would be for your father to do that. Then you can easily get a UK passport. I searched online forever and saw all of the conflicting rules so I just sent my stuff to the embassy and recieved one in no time. The rules have changed since then so you would have to do an in person interview with a consulate, representaive or emabassy as a first time applicant. Your father would not need to do so if he has held a UK passport before.

If you are in the US nobody cares about you having two passports. So if your father thinks he has issues with that it is no problem.
