Question:

UK - France Ferry Crossing?

I am going to backpack around Europe but need to stay on a very tight budget. I am up for taking risks and will be fine if plans go wrong and I need to sleep rough for a couple of nights but how plausable is it to get onto a ferry for free by convincing someone to let me into their car? Would they have to pay more money for an extra person or just the car?

  1. I'm pretty sure it's pay per car - you'd just have to find someone willing to take a stranger into their car.

  2. You will not be able to do this as you must declare the names & details of passengers when booking a journey with a car (and mostly booked online in advance).  It is not a case of just squashing passengers in at the last minute!

Crossing as a foot passenger is not expensive though, so don't go begging around cars (chances are you would get refused anyway)  A single crossing in August is just 12 quid which is $24, so it doesn't cost the earth

It's better to just pay rather than messing with the authorities (including customs/immigration) and jeopodising not only this trip but any future ones
