I was just wondering how much Maternity Pay is in the uk and how long you get it for??

Also, what kind of other benefits do you get if your partner is working.

I know you can also get parternity leave, is this paid (same as maternity pay or soemthing else?)

Thanks

  1. I only know a little: I Paternety leave only lasts for a maximum of 8 weeks where as you can get up to a year for materenty leave.

As far as I am aware your ML is somewhat dependent on your job.  For example if your in the NHS ambulance serivce as soon as your pregnant you are pulled of active service for you and your babies protection.

As far as the money I think its on a scale for how long you take etc.  Your best bet is to as your employer.  If it a big national company they may have an employees hand book wich will tell you more.

  2. check out this link:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Mone...

it has all the information you need regarding UK maternity rights.

  3. i am off on maternity leave just now and currently receive £128 something a week that is the maximum amount if it is not paid to you by your work. it depends how long you have been in your current job as to weather your work pays it or if your paid by the government.

once your child is born and your partner is working you can also apply for child tax credit amount as to how much you can get depends on how much both of yous earn a year

  4. If you're entitled to maternity pay you get 90% of your salary for the first 6 weeks and then £117.18 per week for the remaining 33 weeks.

So you get paid for 9 months altogether.  You can take up to 1 year off, but the final 3 months will be unpaid, unless your company offers to pay you.

I don't know about other benefits you'll get whilst on maternity leave as it'll depend on how much your partner earns.  You'll definitely get child benefit which is about £20 per week I believe.  You'll probably get some form of child tax credits too, and possibly housing benefits, council tax benefits, again depending on your husband's earnings and whether you rent or are homeowners.

You can also get £250 child trust fund money for your baby, no matter what your partner earns.

EDIT - paternity leave - your partner can take 1 or 2 weeks patenrity leave (up to him) and this is paid at £117.18 per week.  His company of course may pay him more, as my husband gets full pay for his leave.

He must take his 1 or 2 weeks together - so he can't take a couple of days of here and there so it 'adds up' to 1 or 2 weeks.

EDIT - you're still entitled to all of the maternity pay even if you don't intend to go back. It is something the Government pays (similar to benefits) not your company.  Your company gets reimbursed for most of your maternity pay.

The only problem could be if your company pays you more than what you're entitled on the proviso that you go back. But this is very rare. A lot of people intend to go back to work (I do) but unexpected events can occur and it would be a farce if you had to pay back maternity pay.

  5. I'm 23 weeks and am in the midst of finding all this out, if you work you can get a year off work for maternity leave, though only 9months will be paid leave of first 6 weeks 90% of your pay then rest at £117.00 a week, your hubby/bf can get 2 weeks off paid paternity leave also,

you will be able to get child benefit, everyone is entitled to this, then working tax credits depending on what your hubby earns and same for child tax credits also.
