Hi! I am starting to get interested in home mechanics and maintaing my own vehicle. At the moment I am a complete novice and so I think an older car might be better for me.

I'd like a cheap runabout that I can tinket with at home, preferably one that turns head and makes people say something like, 'Oh, I love those cars!' or 'Don't see those about much these days!'

I can think of a mini, beetle, 2CV, spitfire,,,,something along those lines. Fuel economy is also a consideration. What would you suggest?

  1. How about a Nissan Micra K10. 1983-1993 small, reliable, fun to drive (It's only 988cc but then again it doesn't weigh much). Fuel economy is also exceptional. My current one came from ebay for £51 and cost £100 to put through it's first MOT. I've now had it for nearly two years and it has never failed to start. Not bad for an 18 year old car.

  2. Suzuki Vitara - very reliable, very simple to run & maintain, great fun.

A four seater open top for virtually no money.

I'd suggest a Suzuki SJ if you could find one, but they tend to be very expensive now.

  3. what about a Ford Mexico
