UK Republic.! ?

Wouldn't we be better off as a Republic....where we could elect a President based on debates like America does. Rather than a political party that is riddled with corruption and special interest representations....and a Country where police chiefs are elected rather than having a job for life. Also to abolish unelected royal parasites who leach of us ordinary folk and live unearned pampered lives while most of us struggle to survive. ? What are your feelings....I'm all for it......couldn't be worse than what we have now.! A bold, brave radical new UK.!

  1. We were a republic once, and it was not a nice experience.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

We are a constitutional monarchy. This means that the highest, executive offices of state are beyond the grasp of ambitious politicians - we will never again have a dictator like the 'lord protector'. But the holder of those offices, the monarch, is restricted in practise to how much power they can actually wield. It is a safeguard against tyranny and has worked since the restoration.

  2. Yes!I agree!the only pointI would make is!Make it a peaceful transition!!

  3. In a word - no.

  4. Oh Yeah........................... I completely forgot,-

The President of the US is elected purely on his ability to engage with the electorate in a intelligent and knowledgeable manner.

Nothing at all to do with vast sums spent on TV advertising, spin campaigns, image, targeting minority groups etc, etc....

By the way, unless we wake up here in the UK it will turn into a republic without your help...................................

    An ISLAMIC Republic !!!

American style politics................ I thought everyone was sick of B'Liar !!!

  5. Sorry John G. Before I'd read your answer I had already formulated my own: President Hillary or President Harriet. I'm not trying to steal your idea.

  6. OI wash that filthy mouth of yours. ARE YOU SOME SORT OF DIRTY LITTLE COMMUNIST!?! the monarchy doesn't leach off us they actually do a lot. but of course you are just another ignorant socialist labour supporter aren't you that has somehow missed the whole concept of what it means to be British!

I'd give you such a slap if you said that to my face Sunshine

  7. Been there done that. They banned Christmas and killed our King.

So we dug them up and cut them to bits.

Democracy can be the very worst tyranny- look at Blair.

  8. "Wouldn't we be better off as a Republic...."

    No.

"where we could elect a President based on debates like America does."

You clearly have not studied the last 50 years of American presidential elections.  They vote based on personality and money.

"Rather than a political party that is riddled with corruption and special interest representations...."

Again, you don't seem to have studied American politics much.  It's the most corrupt of the Western democracies.

"a Country where police chiefs are elected rather than having a job for life."

    1) this does not require a republic to establish.  2) I think there is a good reason why police chiefs should not be elected - justice should not be at the mercy of the people.

"Also to abolish unelected royal parasites who leach of us ordinary folk and live unearned pampered lives while most of us struggle to survive. ?"

'Unelected' is not the same as worthless.  The unelected nature of the Monarchy is its strength.  Read "The Monarchy and the Constitution" by Professor Vernon Bogdanor to discover how the Monarchy is essential to the maintainence of the Constitution, and how it's far more effective in its work than an amateur, egotistical, destructive President.

"couldn't be worse than what we have now.!"

On the contrary, it would be enormously worse.  The monarchy is a fine institution.

"A bold, brave radical new UK.!"

    How cute.

  9. Two words to put you off that daft idea; President Prescott.

  10. its been tried before remember, Cromwell, as long as there is an England, there will always be a royal family,

  11. See, we have been a republic. It didn't go terribly well... Totalitarianism comes to mind...So perhaps Republicanism isn't right for the UK hahaha.

The thing is, we don't want or need a president from years of looking at the USA. OMG PRESIDENTS ARE AMAZING!!!

Many people underestimate the amount of work our "royal parasites", do. The Queen herself, is the hardest working diplomat in the world - she receives and visits foreign envoy almost every day. No will president or prime minister do that.

and 66p a year is not going to make a difference to those struggling to survive...Unless you live in Somalia :P

I'll tell you some of the wealthiest countries that have parliamentary democracies:

    Norway

    UK

    Japan

    Canada

    Australia

    Holland

...all of them with higher living standards than the US

P.s - Please don't try and leave us with your half baked rallying cry :P
