UK Secondary teachers only: It looks as if I'll have eight extra free lessons next year. Should I be worried?

I currently teach Geography to key stage 3, 4, and sixth form. Next year, our department will not have a sixth form (due to non enrollment), and our current year elevens are leaving. We won't have a year ten. So, I'll still teach 13 key stage 3 lessons but will have eight extra free lessons. Should I be worried about redundancy? What if they can' find me something else to teach?

  1. Well, they are going to put you down for cover lessons in the gaps in your timetable. Not always great depending on the school.

Might give you extra citizenship / PHSE  classes.

If you cant enrol 6th formers for Geog. and you dont have a year 10, if I were you I'd move to another school!

Why no year 10 Geog. It sounds like Geog. is going nowhere in your school so move on!

  2. They might get you to do cover, then see if there's any natural wastage so that they don't have to make you redundant.

If I was you I would promote my subject as much as possible so that you get the students to carry on the subject and make sure that your jobs secure..
