UK Student jobs and taxes help?

Hi, I recentley got a job at a large department store, i got my first paycheck last week, however i noticed that they have deducted money somthing called

PAYE ( googled it and its a TAX thing)

problem is they deducted about 10- 20.00 pounds and i only earn 40 a week, because i work part time THE MAIN POINT IS I AM A STUDENT.

I heard and my friends who work say that i shouldnt be that much as I do not even earn as much and I am a student, I was wondering what number do i ring Like REVENUE, or a website

Anyone had he same problem?

  1. Try not to panic.  You might  be on an emergency taxcode which can be changed and you will be refunded.  Or sometimes the first pay cheque can have more tax and national insurance deducted.

    Speak to your employer and contact your local tax office.

  2. Being a student means nothing. In the UK, you pay tax when you earn over £4580 a year http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/paye/intro-basics... which works out at about £90 a week.

    If you're making less than that, you need to send your P60 to the tax office and let them know you aren't earning enough to pay tax.

    There's also a chance that the tax office doesn't have the right tax code for you- normally they tax you first, until you claim it back.
