Also a rough idea of cost and time taken would be great. I'm 22 and want to buy and ride a 200cc Vespa.

  1. please look at www. dsa.gov.uk  and it will tell and show you whats involved

  2. At the moment - the motorcycle test consists of the following maneuvers:

    1) U-Turn

    2) Wheel the bike around

    3) Emergency Stop

    4) Pull away from behind a parked car

    5) Hill start

    6) General Riding

the current price of the bike test (With training) can vary from £380 and upwards depending on what size bike you take the test on and how much training you have. The test itself costs £60 now.

From October you will have to do the following:

    1) On and Off the stand

    2) Wheel the machine around

    3) Slalom

    4) Figure of eight

    5) 30kph circuit ride

    6) 50kph avoidance

    7) Controlled stop

    8) U-Turn

    9) Slow ride

    10) 30kph circuit ride (again)

    11) 50kph emergency stop

All these manoeuvres will be conducted on a large off road site (Multi-purpose test center/MPTC). You MUST pass this par before you will be allowed to go onto the road part of the test, if you fail you have to re-book an entire new test (The same if you pass the off road but fail the on road part).

The problem most people are going to have is that they won't have MPTC in their area so they will have to travel further to take their test, which will result in more pressure being put onto training schools and particular testing centres.

As for a price, I wouldn't be able to give you yet as many training schools are not 100% sure how they are going to be affected by this change and how much training pupils are going to need before taking the new test. On average you are probably looking at near the £1,000 mark (Maybe more) to take the new test with training. Go to http://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=4... for more info

If you want to get your bike licence, book your theory test NOW and then book your CBT and provisionally book yourself dates for test as most school are either fully booked to the end of September or very close to being fully booked. The training school I work for we are completely full apart from the very last week in September before it changes and even now we only have about 2-4 tests available!
