  1. Because it is cheaper to build and run. In Germany, we hardly have any passenger compartments left in 2nd class, but we do still have a lot of them in 1st class.

  2. Bums on seats. You can get far more passengers in a carriage with airline style seating (as they like to call it) as compared with ones with compartments - and they dont care if they place some of those seats beside windon pillars so you can't see out. Railway travel has gone from being comfortable (I'm old enough to reember what a pleasure it was to travel, for example, in Southern Railway, Bullied designed carraiges) to pack 'em in, charge 'em through the nose.

  3. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££...

    Thats the basic answer!

The same reason why when you sit in some seats on a train you get a nice view of the......erm........window frame!!

Squeeze as many seats in as you can guys - sod whether you can see out of the window or not!!

What will they do next i wonder? Start putting two coaches on  a train that normally has three coaches with a few empty seats, and make people stand instead???

Oh no, that's right - they already DO do that don't they!!

  4. Because they were dangerous, you could be attacked, mugged, raped in an isolated compartment. These days, you can in an open compartment! Plus costs and the ability to pack more passengers in and leave them without a seat or anywhere to reasonably put luggage, without disturbing at least 8 people, lucky enough to have a seat!

  5. To cater for the ever growing numbers of passengers

  6. to get more people on

  7. cheaper and safer to build
