UK - Why not invest Billions of pounds in Hydrogen fuel production?

Could, would or should the UK Government invest Billions of pounds in Hydrogen Fuel research, development and production - instead of waisting billions on a running track in East London, a 'war' in Basra and, a failed bank?

Or are there other reasons for keeping the UK economy stuck in the 20th Century?

  1. Because this cretinous Labour Government would sooner give ot away to the 'tin pot' dicators of Africa!!

  2. There are quite a few reasons.

The chief reason that governments don't put all their cash into a Hydrogen economy, is that it probably wouldn't free us from fossil fuels. There aren't vast reserves of Hydrogen hanging around, it's got to be produced by  splitting it from something else. And that process takes energy. Renewable sources aren't nearly efficient enough to do the job yet, so we come back to fossil fuels

  3. Why should it be either/or?   And why specifically hydrogen?....there are many better options.

  4. Because this wonderful Labour government needs all the taxes it collects off us to stop this country from becoming bankrupt!

  5. You don't get hydrogen fuel for nothing.  It has to be made by the electrolysis of water.  The amount of electricity you use is slightly more than the energy required to drive the car.  You've still got to generate the electricity which is an inefficient process.  It would be far more efficient to run the car on the stuff you use to generate the electricity which is ... (hint: 3 letter word starting with o)

  6. Hydrogen fuel is insanely explosive and has to be liquified to transport.  So it takes a lot of fossil fuels to get it around.  And because there is no fueling station now, an entire infrastructure would have to be built.
