UK city with quality live music scene?

I'm a musician from The Netherlands and in search of a better music scene. Which city in the UK has reasonable cost of living (so London is out of the question) and a good music scene? Also, please tell me what kind of music.

Sheffield is very cheap to live- we live in a 4 bedroom house for £600 a month, while a flat in london with 2 beds would be more! The music scene is pretty good too, theres loads o flive music venues (dance, indie, rock, metal). Google "leadmill sheffield" "plug sheffield" "corporation sheffield" "carling academy sheffield". if you are on facebook there is a group called sheffield gig goers...have a look at that to get an idea about how much is going on. look me up when you get here!!
