UK to Ireland travel questions?

Right, where do I begin?

On the 4th of July, me and a friend want to travel to Letterkenny which is in the Republic of Ireland I gather. Ryanair will get us from London Standstead to Londonderry (which is in Northern Ireland). From there we can get to Letterkenny on a bus. I have a valid provisional driving license, proof of age card and a birth certificate but no passport. My friend has a passport but it has expired. She does have an NUS card with her picture on, a birth certificate, medical card etc to back up who she is. Will this be ok do you think?

Another option is travelling from East Midlands Airport to Belfast Int Airport with BMIBaby. I have spoken to them and they have said they will accept all of my friends documents. Thing is, how would we get from Belfast Int Airport to Londonderry? Does anyone know bus and train details/prices etc?

I have never really been anywhere other than Skegness lol so I am a bit clueless. All help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

  1. As far as I know you need a passport on airplanes,

but stena line all you need is id, but I doubt you'll want to travel all the way over to Hollyhead, get a 2 hour boat, then get a 4 hour bus from Dublin to Letterkenny.

  2. hi you

it looks like you have all your bases covered and i do hope you enjoy your trip and just for you own imformation if you ever what to go back to the wast of ireland again you should fly ryan air to knock it is closer for it will cost to must not to change your tickets so let them as they are oh you dont need a password if you were bron in the uk to come to ireland but you will need photo i.d for ryan air and like i said you have that covered

  3. I wouldn't chance Ryanair without a passport.  Derry isn't far from letterkenny.  I used to live there and it is a brilliant town.  You can get a bus from Belfast airport to Derry and then get a bus from Derry to L'kenny.  Derry is the nearest airport.  Would your friend not have enough time to get a passport???

  4. You don't need a passport! Get flight to Derry and Short bus journey to Letterkenny

  5. Woo enjoy letterkenny - i'm living here! Anyway, if you go to belfast instead of derry, you need to take the bus to belfast city eurolines station first, then a bus to londonderry. Then u need to take another bus from derry to letterkenny! A lot of hassle considering it's a pretty short journey, but letterkenny is totally worth it (well, loads of nightlife and nothing much else really).  Hope this helps!

  6. All passengers must present valid photo identification to check-in for all flights. The only acceptable forms of photo-ID on Ryanair flights are:

A valid passport (passport for travel outside the EEA must have six months validity beyond the date of entry).

    OR

A valid National Identity Card issued by the government of a European Economic Area (EEA) country. Only the following countries from the EEA issue National Identity Cards which are acceptable for carriage: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden (for travel within the Schengen area only) and Switzerland.

    OR

For British and Irish citizens who are travelling on flights to/from the United Kingdom, to/from the Republic of Ireland (Common Travel Area), a valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID. Passengers who are citizens of other countries travelling on these routes must present a valid passport (with visa if applicable) or a National Identity Card issued either by the government of a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland.

A valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID for travel on domestic flights. (Please note that driving licences are not accepted when passengers are using online check-in)

You'd be ok with your Licence.Your friend's student I.D. isn't suitable for Ryanair.

Flying with Ryanair to Derry would be by far the most convenient. There's a scheduled airport bus runs regularly to and from the bus station spark in the middle of Letterkenny.

If your friend called in personally to the passport office with her expired one and her birth cert she could have it issued that day.

  7. I think with Ryanair you'll need a passport.... but with Aer Lingus all you need is a valid bus pass with your photo.

  8. youll need a passport!
