UK vs. US university credits?

How does the UK credit system work? I am trying to find course at my visiting university in the UK that are equivalent to my home university's courses in the USA.

For example, my Spanish class would be 5 credit hours in the USA, but in the UK, it is worth 20 credits. In order to get the course approved, I need to know how many hours/credits 20 credits would be equivalent to.

Board of Directors of your US University must establish joint degree programs & credit transfer programs. It will vary university to university.
