Has anyone ever attended their cadet program? If so how would you rank it? How does a career in the yachting industry differ from a career in the merchant industry, as a engineer/dock officer.

  1. Never heard of UKSA,  but again there are hundreds of companies that do the same thing.  Some actually teach you some are fly by nights that just cattle herd you into a QMED.

the yachting industry you are working mainly on passenger vessels

They TEND (exceptions to the rule exist ) to be cleaner and better maintained.  You tend to see better ports of call.   You get to talk to people other than the crew, some exceptions some company policies limit crew and passenger interactions.

If you work on Private Yachts (usually owned by large companies) then most of the time the boat will be empty as the guests fly to the next port of call by private jet.

Downsides, more rules and regulations specially uniform and appearance- hair and beard standards- (company I worked for must be clean shaven with absolutely no tattoos)

Merchant ships (I worked tugs) the tugs as long as you were qualified for you job, they didn't care how you dress (some companies are little more strict on this) if you shaved, how long your hair was, and you could scream yell and cuss at the items being transported ( mainly bulk commodities).

Pay varies greatly between type and size of ship, its use and from company to company.   Ive personally made from $41 a day to $744 a day
