Question:

UKanians?!?

Pre the internet, I always thought I was English. I am from England, ergo, in my eyes, English.

Then along came the internet with its many Americanisms.

I went onto websites that asked me to state my country of origin... I searched for England. Nothing there. I searched for Britain. Nothing there. Eventually, having trolled through all the options, I realised that the 'best fit' was the UK

Anyone else remember when they become a UKanian, rather than English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish?

What gives?!

  1. I knew ever since I looked at a map. I've always thought of myself as a citizen of the UK.

  2. I became aware that people outside classed me as UK the first time I left the country, which was over 40 years ago now (well before the internet era) ... I'm proud to call myself English but it's only the people within the UK understand the difference I think

  3. We became 'UKanians' in 1800 when the Act Of Union united Great Britain (formed by the union of England and Scotland in 1707) with the Kingdom Of Ireland to form the United Kingdom.

  4. i've known ever since i recieved my first passport and it states i'm a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and not a Citizen of England
