UMD Passport allows PlayStation Vita users to repurchase PSP games for cheap, here is how
Sony have confirmed that there is a way for potential PlayStation Vita users to transfer games that they have purchased for the PlayStation Portable onto the Vita using the UMD Passport, albeit at a price.
The PlayStation Vita took the gaming world by storm when it was officially unveiled at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 as the common gamer likes to call it. With a list of seemingly unending features and a price point that had the crowd cheering,
Later it was revealed that there would around a 100 games available for the PlayStation Vita on day one, including titles such as ModNation Racers, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Ridge Racer. However, it seems that Sony were not satisfied and have now come
up with a scheme to allow gamers to repurchase and play their PlayStation Portable titles on the Vita.
The UMD Passport is that scheme and gamers can use it to get a discount on the repurchase of any currently owned PSP game on Sony’s next generation of handheld portable gaming devices.
Nearly 200 titles will be re-purchasable via the UMD Passport and games are expected to cost anywhere between 500 to 1500 yen.
Gamers who wish to transfer their games onto the Vita and are looking to take advantage of the UMD Passport need only follow the four simple steps laid out by the company.
Firstly, they will need to “Download a UMD Registration Application from the PlayStation Store to your PSP.”
After which they will need to, “Boot up the UMD Registration Application from your PSP’s XMB menu and insert the UMD game you want to register into the system.”
The next step requires users to, “Follow the prompts to register you UMD disc with your PSN account.”
And lastly, “You can then download the downloadable version of your game at (a) discount price,”
Some may argue that the fact that gamers have to pay for a game they already own may be a bit harsh, yet on the other hand Sony are offering a way to transfer their UMD games, which would otherwise turn into trash, onto the Vita, albeit for a sneaky fee.
However, with the number and calibre of games that have been announced for the PlayStation Vita a shortage of titles to choose from seems to be the least of the portable console’s worries. Apart from the games already mentioned Street Fighter X Tekken, WipeOut
2048, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance Burning Skies are also on the list, as is EA Sports football simulation game FIFA 12.
All in all the UMD Passport seems a decent enough idea from Sony and one can count on a number of users taking advantage of its when it releases on the 6th of December.
