UMES Hawks ready to start the 2012 regular season on Friday – Volleyball News
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s volleyball team, which has the official mascot of Hawks, is set to open the 2012 regular season on coming Friday, August 24.
The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion will head into a new season under the command of experienced coach Don Mitel. The Hawks will open the regular season by participating in the SFC Terrier Invitational. The UMES squad will take a road
trip to Brooklyn Heights, New York in order to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in the first match of the season. Furthermore, the Hawks will go against St. Francis and Radford in the next two games.
Next up, the Hawks will appear in the Tiger Invitational that will take place in Savannah, Georgia.  Metil’s team will be joined by Southern Utah, New Mexico, UNC Asheville, and Kennesaw State. The five-team tournament will cover its length from August 31
to September 2.
Third tournament of the season will bring the UMES Hawks in competition with MEAC North opponents. The WVU Golden Horseshoe Challenge will put the Hawks to another test of skills at the Hytche Athletic Centre in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The volleyball action will continue and Hawks will make their next move to Montgomery, Alabama for four matches of the ASU Tournament. The Hawks will meet opponents from Alabama State University, North Texas, and Jackson State.
Roadrunner Classic in California will be featured as the fifth and final regular season tournament for UMES Hawks.
Speaking of the 2012 season, Metil said: "In all, the schedule was designed to give us different levels of play, be tested early and often, and prepare us for a strong run at defending our Northern Divisional and MEAC titles.”
He further added: “This year's schedule should allow us to see both regional competition as well as opponents that UMES may have never played before. A lot of the teams on our non-conference schedule this season appear to be established squads in regards
to their roster. If our young team can compete against seasoned squads, this will place us in a strong position for postseason play."
