UNC Tar Heels’ Charles Brown will miss rest of season
University of North Carolina cornerback Charles Brown will miss the rest of the year after being suspended by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits.
Brown was part of an ongoing investigation led by the NCAA into UNC players taking improper benefits from player agents. The university did not specify what types of improper benefits Brown received and
how much the gifts were worth.
The suspension of Brown marks the sixth UNC player to be suspended for the 2010 season. Brown joins recently suspended safeties Brian Gupton and Jonathan Smith. In addition, the club has also suspended
defensive end Robert Quinn and wide receiver Greg Little, who were deemed to be ‘permanently ineligible’ after they took jewellery and had their travel accommodations paid for. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels elected to kick defensive tackle Marvin Austin off the
team after the NCAA revealed that he had taken somewhere between $10,000 to $13,000 in improper benefits.
North Carolina has been dealing with the investigation all season and in addition to the six players suspended, seven players have been cleared. Defensive lineman Linwan Euwell and tailback Ryan Houston
were cleared to play without suspension. However, tailback Shaun Draughn received a one game suspension, while safety Da'Norris Searcy was handed a three-game ban.
In addition, the school still has three players under investigation, in defensive end Michael McAdoo, fullback Devon Ramsay and cornerback Kendric Burney. These players have not been able to play as their
eligibility is still in question. They will not be allowed back into the line-up until the NCAA comes to a decision on their status.
The investigation has hurt the Tar Heels' chances of succeeding this season. The club entered 2010 as the 18th ranked team in the nation. Unfortunately, the club lost their first two games,
were dropped from the rankings and currently sits at 4-2, good enough for fourth in the ACC Coastal.
