UNC says they will not impose sanctions
University of North Carolina chancellor Holden Thorp says that the school will not be putting self-imposed sanctions in place after an investigation into their football program came to a close earlier this week.
North Carolina was under investigation by the NCAA when it was revealed that several players had taken improper benefits from agents before signing with the representative or informing their athletic director.
The investigation expanded when it was revealed that a UNC coach was working for an agent in California, attempting to recruit players out of university. In addition, there were accusations that a number of players had committed academic violations with
the help of a tutor employed by the team.
North Carolina has suffered through the investigation all season with 13 players being forced to sit out the first game of the season, while the NCAA determined their eligibility. At the conclusion of the investigation, eight UNC players had been deemed
permanently ineligible.
Nevertheless, Thorp said on Thursday 18 November that the school was satisfied with their internal investigation and had no plans of imposing sanctions.
Thorp, athletic director d**k Baddour and head coach Butch Davis met with the board of trustees, saying they were deeply saddened by the negative spotlight cast on the university during the investigation.
Although North Carolina has decided not to impose sanctions, it is unlikely the NCAA will be as forgiving. The size and scope of the investigation will certainly warrant repercussions, with the most likely punishment seeing the club eliminated from bowl
or championship eligibility.
Despite their struggles off the field, the Tar Heels have managed to put a strong product on the field, as the club currently sits at 6-4 with a 3-3 record against conference opponents.
North Carolina is back in action on Saturday 20 November when they play North Carolina State.
