i just got my blood checked; my doctor informed me that i have high cholesterol, coupled with a light case of anemia. the anemia part- that's understandable, because i don't tend to eat meat, but i have no idea why i have a high cholesterol, since i am about 15 pounds underweight. my cholesterol was about 225 mg/dl, and i'm only 16. i don't understand how this can happen; i never eat food high in fat. i do tend to eat a lot of sweets- does that correlate to my high cholesterol??i don't think it's genetic, because my parents have unusually low cholesterols.

  1. Cholesterol is a result of what you eat but also how your body processes food. Regardless of your parents, it could be you are one of those people who are prone to high cholesterol. Regarding your diet, remember that any food, especially processed desserts, etc. can contain saturated and trans fats, which can cause high cholesterol. Try to reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Also, eat Cheerios and oatmeal - oats act kind of like a sponge for cholesterol. If you get in the habit of eating oatmeal for breakfast, you can reduce your cholesterol by 10 points or more.

  2. Weight does not correlate with cholesterol as much as the types of food that you are eating does. If you are eating foods that are filled with unhealthy fats and oils, that is probably the cause of the cholesterol. Even if you are underweight, try incorporating more lean proteins into your diet in place of the fats and sweets that you are eating now. This will help you put on some muscle weight as well as lower your cholesterol.

  3. you might be underweight but if you eat a lot of trans and saturated fats every day instead of healthier fats, proteins and carbohydrates your liver will turn the trans/ saturated fats into blood cholesterol. You should eat more fiber and exercise more to try and lower it.
