UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM...help please?

This question is directed at people who have/are/know someone who is studying at birmingham university. I've just recieved my A level results today and have been accepted into bham uni. Im over the moon about being accepted, however i have one worry: The social life in the uni seems to suck big time.

Ive visited the uni on many occasions, and each time i go it fails to impress me. The atmosphere is REALLY boring, walking around campus you hardly see any students walking around, eveyone seems to be around 30years old+, and it just seems extremely dull.

All this compared to college life - which is fantstic...as you walk arund the site theres groups of people laughing and messing around and havig a good time - At bham its all rush rush rush with stressed out faces and serious fashion victims lol

I feel as though if i go to bham uni my social life is gonna be a complete DUD and i'll end up stressed and bald by the time im 20 lol.

Can anyone help change my view about the place? As in, is there an important social aspect of the uni that i dont know about...or am i completely right in thinking the next few years of my life are going to be FAR from the best in my life...??? please tell me im wrong about it...

  1. OK, it's a while since I was there, but I don't think you need to worry. Most of my best times took place off campus. Make sure you get to the society recruitment stands during Freshers' Week - whatever your extracurricular interests, chances are you'll be spoiled for choice of like-minded people.

  2. THe uni social life is as good as any univ, not sure what course or faculty you have been to, but the average age of students is still 20+. Yes there are mature students, there are college staff and visitors, but it is a world class university, not a cafeteria or a fashion house!

Birmingham does have a good social life, you need to spend some time on Broad street or Custard factory. Students tend to live in Moseley and Harborne in shared  houses. In your first year you might find time spent in Hall near the campus is the best way to meet friends and to have a social life.

Birmingham is very central so you can travel to see friends or they can come to you, you can go home for food and laundry as often as you like. Birmingham is relatively cheap to live, good food shops and cheap eating out places. London and Oxford are good unis but they will cost you a lot more to live there.

I have lived and worked in Wolverhampton and been to courses at Birmingham on many occasions. I think it is better than some, but not a parkland place like Keele or Reading, but it is alive and not filled with the stressed and bald on the days I have seen it.

Its 3 years of your life so its important to choose wisely..In the end the quality of the degree and the university status will help you with your career and further studies.

If you think you can do better then its Clearing and take your chances next year, have a year out, work for Prada or travel the world a bit.

  3. Erm, correct me if im wrong but your going to uni to get a degree and study, not getting worried about not getting wrecked every five minutes.

I think you have your priorities back to front.

Those people who looked stressed out ARE stressed, because their work is more important to them. You seem like a pisstaker.
