UNNUSUAL NOISE FROM CLUTCH OR ENGINE OR CHAIN?

Hi i have an 04 sv650s, 31000k on it.

Riding it yesterday i heard a bit of an unussual noise,

almost like hrshhhhh hrshhhh. i can't realy hear the noise while bike is stationary but if i get it up to 50k/hr and pull the clutch in i can feel a bit of vibration in the foot pegs coresponding to every hrshhh

it doesn't seem like the noise is changing with engine rpm but it seem to change with speed.

It also seems like the noise changes (amplyfies) when i disengage the clutch (pull lever in) but its hard to confirm if it actually does due to the aftermarket exhaust which i pretty loud possibly covering the noise when not in idleling with clutch pulled in

note: chain is 5000k old

ANy idea what the problem might be?

Thanks !

  1. get a stethascope and  put it in differant places and listen you will pinpoint it that way. Or use a wrench like a scope. The wrench is metal it will transfer sound so you can hear better. a scope is better though.

  2. Remove the front sprocket cover - you can "see" and hear the noise better if it's coming from the sprocket.

If you can reach, lay on the bike and cover the muffler opening with the top of your toe (while riding), to quiet the exhaust.

At the same time, you'll be closer to the noise.

  3. Last time I heard a noise like that, I had a loose chain.

When it contacted the swingarm it made that noise.

Clutch in/out and accel/decel would make the noise change/go away due to chain tension changes.

  4. might be time for a new chain again but check the tension and sprocket first
