UNT Mean Green hire Dan McCarney as head coach
According to a report from ESPN Dallas the University of North Texas Mean Green have signed Dan McCarney as the team’s new head coach.
The Mean Green began searching for a new head coach after firing Todd Dodge, who was unable to get the club to a bowl game in his four seasons at North Texas. The lack of success the team has experienced in 2010 was the final straw for the university, as
the club finished the season at 3-9 with a 3-5 record against conference opponents. The Mean Green floundered at the bottom of the Sun Belt standings all season, finishing 7th out of eight teams.
The Mean Green is determined to make their program relevant, as the university is set to unveil a brand new stadium next season, which cost $78 million. Part of the development of the program has centred on finding an impressive coach with a deep resume.
The search began with the team announcing they would be paying their new skipper a six figure salary. The announcement led to the team considering McCarney along with former Tulsa and Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe and Dennis Franchione, who has spent time
with TCU and Alabama.
However, in the end the university elected to go with McCarney, who spent 12 seasons coaching the Iowa State Cyclones. In that time McCarney was able to take the Cyclones to five bowl games, snapping a 22-year bowl winless drought in 2000. McCarney finished
with an overall record of 56-85, making him the winningest coach to ever work with the Mean Green.
North Texas is expected to be a work in progress for some time, as McCarney will be charged with the tough task of turning the program around and getting them back to the top of the Sun Belt Conference.
