Ok, so, I just came back, and found that in my gerbils' litter box, there was abnormal p**p. It seemed mushy and had VERY little red liquid (blood, most likely) and urine. There are 8 gerbils in the home. 3 are 5-week old pups, 3 more are 1-week old pups, and there is one mother gerbil, about 5 months old. Keep in mind that there is another cage nearby with the father.

We cleaned the cage out yesterday, and starting yesterday, my mom put oats in their fooddish. We gave the mother about 2-4 sunflower seeds.

I checked their bottoms, and the mom is the only one that has a brownish a**s. She has the illness I think.

******

Now, my problem is that it is 9:00 PM over here, small animal hospitals are either closed sunday, or close at noon at sunday. All Petco's , Petsmart's, and Petland's are closed.***

I've heard that wet tail can kill in 24 hrs. Is it wet tail? If it is, what can I do about it?

  1. No, it is not Wet Tail. Only syrian hamsters can get the disease called "Wet tail". What your gerbil has is diarrhea, which could be caused by any number of things. But it is not "Wet tail".

Also, Dri tail is a terrible product to use on small animals. Most of the time, it actually makes things worse. Do not use it.

Diarrhea in gerbils can  be caused by eating too much fresh fruits and veggies. But it can also be one of the first signs of Tyzzer's disease, which can be deadly. You need to get her to the vet when they open in the morning.

Edit: Tonight, the best thing you can do is separate her from the others and completely sanitize their cage. Tyzzer's is spread through contact with the infected animals f***s, so the other ones could catch it too. Make sure they all have plenty of water, a clean cage, and a proper diet. Please try to keep them from stressing.

  2. Im sorry about this. This is really nothing you can do about it. You  need to keep the mother away from the others and watch the other for the same symptoms. If she lives tomorrow i would take her to the vet and have it check. Keep a eye on her. If it is not to severe she will be fine and the vet will give her some meds. Just keep an eye on her. It sounds like she is at the start of wet tail. Im sorry.

  3. please get all of the poor babys to an emergency room THE SECOND YOU READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
