My flute teacher (Who in this message will be known as Teach lol) kept on saying "Stop hunching your shoulders " and "stop looking like a Quasimodo *then proceeds to look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame and makes "urr...." noises". She also was really snappy, and kept snapping at me to put my shoulders down.

I found this extremely offensive - I used to have a hunch on my back before having an operation, couldn't put my shoulders down because I was in agony with holding the flute up for 30 min with not enough breaks, and could barely consentrate with anger.

I didn't say anything because I am extremely shy, and was too busy trying not to walk out because of the pain and that so what should I do when I go back to school???

  1. first off is this a private lesson ? if it is, just tell her up front, "listen, I really don't appreciate you making little jokes about Quasimodo concerning my back, I have had surgery to try to fix it. I'm trying my hardest to follow instruction but it just hurts too much,." or something like that, Basically tell her wuat you wrote in this question! You have to decide what is worse: overcoming your shyness and saying it to her face, or sitting there helplessly while she picks on you for something that's not your fault!

  2. You have three courses of action in my mind.  First, you can ignore what she did and try not to let it get to you.

Second, you can confront her personally and let her know that it offended you and why.  If she keeps insulting you after this, move to option three.

Speak to the administration, such as your principal or someone in the office.  Let them know exactly what transpired.  You have the grounds for a legitimate complaint, to be sure.  In today's world, I wouldn't be surprised if you could break out a serious discrimination accusation or something similar.

    I recommend the second option.

  3. Okay i know that's annoying cause i played the flute too!!

Your shy understandable, but if it hurts you need to tell the teach at the beginning of the school year, so that she knows that you're not slacking off, your trying to feel comfortable playing an instrument that you love!!! Once you tell her and she still annoys you with it just keep straight tell it hurts then stop if she says anything about it politely remind her about what you told her at the beginning of the school year.

  4. Well, does she know about your medical condition?  If she doesn't, then she was probably just snapping/scolding because she didn't know and thought you were just the typical lazy student who doesn't care about posture.  Just let her know that you're trying, but you have a medical condition that makes it difficult for you, and I'm sure she'll be more understanding. (if she doesn't believe you, have your mom/dad write a note or get a doctor's note)

  5. She sounds like a *********      haha

i would say just explain your situation one day after school or before class and tell her that u have had a problem with it in the past and how painful it is for u to hold up your flute for that long.. and if she still snaps at you, tell your mom and have your mom talk to her.

    Good Luck! <3

  6. She probably does not know that you have had back problems in the past. I know you are shy, but you need to tell her what is going on. Tell her that you do not like her name-calling as you have had a hunch back in the past and find it offensive. Also let her know how much it hurts for you to practice like that and until you have developed all those muscles that you need some breaks during practice. At home you should also practice sitting correctly when practicing your flute playing so that way you can help develop those muscles as well.

To help with the pain I would take some Tylenol or Ibuprofen right before practice as well.

  7. Wow...she's extremely rude!

if you really can't take it anymore, leave

get another fluter teacher...a nicer one =]
